What’s the difference between silks and hammock?

We’ve been getting this question a lot. Are you wanting to sign up for a beginning aerial class, but are not sure what to expect in each class? Here’s a quick lesson on our lessons!

Adult Aerial Hammock: Aerial hammock is very similar to aerial silks, in that it is fabric. They key difference is in how the fabric is tied off, which affects the ways you will move on said fabric! Aerial hammock is tied off at the two ends at the top, creating a literal hammock. This can be slightly more beginner friendly, as it provides support. This is particularly helpful in the beginning stages of aerials, while you are building strength and fitness. Our beginning aerial hammock class moves at a medium skill pace, and always incorporates an element of stretching and strengthening to every warm up. This helps build fitness and prepares our bodies for the harder work on the hammock. On the hammock, you will explore various supported positions to start, and build up to more and more positions requiring a heightened level of strength and flexibility as you progress. We expect most people stay in the beginning hammock class for at least 2 sessions before moving on to the beginning 2 class, which will incorporate longer flows, a few fun drops, and more complex wraps!

Classes on Wednesday nights @ 6pm! Sign up!

Adult Beginning Aerial Silks: Aerial Silks is tied off at the center of the fabric, which creates two sides that hang down from their anchor. Aerial silks at the beginning stages incorporates a few key hammock shapes while strength is being built, and moves towards “open silks” in which we don’t tie a knot in the bottom. This requires the strength and fitness to climb and wrap oneself in the fabric without any additional support. Just as in hammock, each class will incorporate elements of strength and flexibility work in the beginning of class, then move on to specific skills such as climbing, foot locks, and more.

Classes on Mondays @ 7pm or Wednesdays @ 8pm sign up!

Aerial Arts takes hard work and dedication. A good chunk of that time and dedication needs to be spent OFF YOUR APPARATUS and on the mat targeting specific muscle groups and getting bendy (both for injury prevention, and that extra wow factor.) This means if you want to REALLY IMPROVE you need to be willing to put in that extra time stretching, strengthening, hydrating, and giving your body the proper nutrition it needs! We’ve got classes to help teach you the exercises and techniques that will help condition you for your air time! Check em’ out!

See you in the studio!
